Getting to Know Windham Fabrics

Baum Textile Mills, Inc., the parent company of Windham Fabrics, is a family-run business founded in 1955. After 40 years spent developing a distinguished reputation for quality fleece and flannel products, Baum shifted its attention to independent quilt shops, introducing a new division called Windham Fabrics.

Working tirelessly with industry experts, quilt historians, an in-house design studio and respected designers worldwide, Windham Fabrics has become a leader in the industry.

Customers appreciate the authentic reproductions of antique fabrics and the painstaking effort that's gone into creating all of the captivating collections at Windham Fabrics – exquisite florals, breathtaking textures, playful retro themes and more.

Tools You Need When Sewing Windham Fabric

Certain tools are necessary when working on any quilt. Seasoned quilters know you need these must-have quilting tools and supplies in your sewing room:

  • Sewing Machine
  • Iron
  • Self-Healing Cutting Mat
  • Rotary Cutter/Shears
  • Pins
  • Rulers

Once you've chosen the Windham fabric for your project, make sure you also pick out the notions required to complete your project:

  • Thread: Choose matching or contrasting colors of thread based on your preference. You may decide to use a different shade for each section of your quilt.
  • Needles: Make sure you have extra needles, both for hand- and machine-sewing – and that they're the appropriate size for the fabric you've chosen.
  • Batting: There are a few different kinds of quilt batting. This is the stuff that goes between the two layers of your quilt to give it heft.
  • Backing: If this is your first rodeo, remember you must choose a large piece of fabric for the reverse side of your quilt. We have wide quilt backing fabric in stock for just this purpose.
