What Is the Best Material to Use for Quilt Backing Fabric?

In general, it's best to use the same quilting fabric for the back and as the quilt top. For example, if you used cotton fabrics for your top, then you may want to use a cotton quilt backing, too. How Do I Know What Size of Quilt Backing Fabric I Should Buy?

Your quilt backing fabric should be larger on all sides than your quilt top. As a general rule, add at least 8 inches to both the length and width of your quilt to allow some wiggle room for the sewing machine to take up the quilt as it goes and any shifting that may happen. Then, trim off the selvages and use a 1/2" seam allowance when you're piecing your quilt back fabric.
