Wide Quilt Backing Fabric

In general, it's best to use the same quilting fabric for the back and as the quilt top. For example, if you used cotton fabrics for your top, then you may want to use a cotton quilt backing, too. There are many standard backing and wide quilt backings options. However, you don't always have to use the same material for your quilt backing fabric. Some quilters enjoy using flannel or ultra-soft, plush Cuddle fabric for backing their baby quits or winter quilts.

Your quilt backing fabric should be larger on all sides than your quilt top. As a general rule, add at least 8 inches to both the length and width of your quilt to allow some wiggle room for the sewing machine to take up the quilt as it goes and any shifting that may happen. Then, trim off the selvages and use a 1/2" seam allowance when you're piecing your quilt back fabric.

There are many reasons you may want to use wide quilt backing, but some of the top reasons include:

• Lower cost: Wide quilt backing usually costs less per square foot than smaller sizes of quilt backing fabric.
• Saves time: Not having to piece together smaller fabric yardage for your quilt backing can save you hours.
• Cleaner look: No seams in your quilt backing leaves your finished quilt looking cleaner.
