Batting Fabric in All Your Favorite Blends

If you're new to quilting, you may wonder, "What is quilt batting?" No quilt is complete without the perfect batting, the unsung hero that brings comfort, warmth and stability to your beautiful designs. It's the layer in the middle between the quilt top and quilt backing fabric that makes a quilt a quilt, and selecting the right batting fabric is a crucial step in its creation. At Fat Quarter Shop, we provide an unparalleled array of precut batting tailored to match the diverse needs of our crafting community.

Explore our range of batting blends designed to provide just the right combination of weight, warmth and drape for your quilt:

  • 100% Cotton Batting: Natural and breathable, cotton quilt batting is excellent for bed and baby quilts. It's also a great choice for new stitchers – you'll notice free quilt patterns (many of which are designed for new quilters) don't always tell you what type of batting squares to use.
  • Polyester Batting: Lightweight and highly durable, perfect for machine quilting.
  • Cotton/Polyester Blend Batting: Combines cotton's breathability with polyester's durability.
  • Wool Batting: Offers exceptional warmth and is perfect for hand quilting.
  • Silk Batting: Luxurious and breathable, providing a soft drape.
  • Bamboo/Cotton Blend Batting: An eco-friendly choice that offers softness and warmth.
  • Fusible Batting: Has an adhesive on both sides that's activated by heat. This allows you to baste your quilt sandwich (top, batting and backing) together by ironing instead of using pins or a spray adhesive.

It's worth noting that quilt kits don't include batting fabric, so you'll need to add them to your cart before checking out.

Choosing the Perfect Size of Batting for Quilts

Choosing the right size of batting for quilts is as crucial as selecting the perfect blend. While it's often purchased in standard precut sizes, it's important to understand that you need to adjust the size based on your quilt pattern's specifications. Here's a quick guide to help you make the best decision:

  • Crib Size: Typically measuring 45 inches by 60 inches, this size is ideal for small quilts and baby blankets.
  • Twin Size: With standard dimensions of 72 inches by 90 inches, it's perfect for twin-size bed quilts or slightly larger lap quilts.
  • Full Size: Usually measures around 81 inches by 96 inches, making it an excellent choice for full or double-bed quilts.
  • Queen Size: Coming in at 90 inches by 108 inches, it's the right size for queen-size bed quilts.
  • King Size: The largest standard size, typically 120 inches by 120 inches, is used for king-size bed quilts.
  • Runner or Wall Hanging Size: These are usually smaller and can vary widely in size. The best option is to buy a package of batting a few inches larger than the finished piece and cut it down to size.
  • Precut Square Sizes: These precut squares are size around common quilt block sizes and are ideal for quilt-as-you-go projects, where you piece and quilt each quilt block individually before joining them.

Remember, the ideal quilt batting size will be slightly larger than your quilt top to allow for quilting and to account for any possible shrinkage during the washing process. We typically recommend adding an extra 5-inches of batting on all sides of your quilt, which adds a total of 10-inches to the height and width of your quilt for the batting size.

Frequently Asked Questions About Quilt Batting

There's more to quilt batting than meets the eye. We've answered some of the commonly-asked questions about batting for quilts, but please reach out if you want to know more.

What Is the Best Quilt Batting for My Project?

When choosing batting squares, consider the end use of your quilt. For example, a bed quilt will benefit from warm, breathable cotton quilt batting, while a wall hanging might require polyester fabric batting for added durability. Also, consider your preferred quilting technique. Some types of batting fabric are better suited to hand quilting, others to machine quilting.

Can I Use More Than One Layer of Batting for My Quilt?

Yes, using more than one layer of batting for a quilt is a way to provide extra warmth and loft to your quilt. However, multiple layers of project batting can make the quilting process more difficult – especially for beginners – and can make the finished quilt quite heavy. If you're machine quilting, you should test a small portion to ensure your machine can stitch through the extra layer of batting.

What Is Blended Cotton Batting?

Blended cotton batting is a type of quilt batting that combines cotton with another type of fiber, such as polyester, bamboo or wool. This blend creates a batting that takes advantage of the benefits of both materials.

What Is Scrim in Quilt Batting?

Scrim is a light, thin layer of woven material that's needle-punched into the batting fabric during its manufacturing process. This thin layer, often made from polyester, provides extra stability and strength to the batting.

What Is "Loft" in Batting Fabric?

Loft is the thickness of the batting fabric. A high loft means the batting is thick and fluffy, which can make the quilt warmer and puffier. Low loft batting is thinner, providing less warmth but a flatter appearance to the quilt, which may be more suitable for detailed quilting patterns.
