Most cross stitch floss (also known as embroidery floss thread) consists of six strands. Cross stitch projects are typically stitched on a 14-count or 16-count Aida fabric and call for two strands of thread to be used – so you'll need to pull apart the floss thread and pair the strands up before you thread your needle.

What's the Difference Between Embroidery Floss and Cross Stitch Floss?
There's no difference between the two, except in the number of threads you use for each form of needlework. Generally, you'll use two cross stitch threads, but for other embroidery projects, you will use up to six threads. Although it may be referred to as "embroidery silk," floss thread is usually made of cotton.
