Sewing Notions, Supplies & Accessories

If you're a beginning quilter, you may find the number of sewing supplies to be a bit overwhelming. We have several hundred sewing notions online at Fat Quarter Shop. The good news is that novice stitchers don't need every tool right out of the gate – but there are some essential sewing notions you'll need to get started.

As you become more experienced, you'll discover additional sewing accessories that can streamline the quilting process. For now, make sure you have the following sewing notions and supplies before you begin your quilted masterpiece:

Preparing to Sew

There is a lot of work that takes place before putting needle to fabric. Measuring, cutting and pinning are just a few of the tasks you'll need to perform before you start sewing. From the measuring tape to the pattern to marking pens, we have the notions to help you make prep work as smooth as possible.

Sewing Your Fabric

High quality thread is definitely essential when it comes to sewing a quilt – or anything else, for that matter. You'll also need a supply of hand and sewing machine needles in various sizes to accommodate different fabrics. Let's not forget seam rippers. Even the most experienced stitcher keeps a seam ripper handy. We've all had our hand slip when we're trying to applique a piece – and occasionally a sneeze has been known to create a zig-zag where none was intended.

Finishing Your Quilt

Quilt batting is among the sewing supplies you'll need to finish your quilt.  Sewing notions also play a part in the finishing flourishes for your quilt. Some quilters add buttons, trim or other decorative elements to give their project a unique look. And don't forget the thimbles – they're a necessity if you're doing any hand-sewing.

Of course, quilters aren't the only ones who need fabric and sewing supplies. Anyone who sews needs the basics. And if you're sewing clothing, making purses or embarking on another stitching adventure, you'll need things like zippers, hooks and other fasteners.
