Zen Chic

Modern Design Review by Michelle
Rating

This pattern is half square triangles mixed with some solid charm squares trimmed down to 4.5 inches. I've made a couple Zen Chic patterns and I find the color choices in the photos and the designs very appealing. One thing to note about Zen Chic, particularly if you're a beginner like me, is that the instructions are sparse. The technical instructions for the block assembly is there for you but nothing for layout or which patterns go with what if you select the same fabric as in the photo. There's only the pattern photo to use as a layout guide and it takes a magnifying glass to see the rows. The directional seam allowance pressing isn't indicated. What has happened on both Zen Chic patterns I've made so far is I end up with a minimum of 8 layers of fabric at some points when I get lucky by using the press to the dark side method which is what I use when pressing instructions are not indicated. But I also get 16 layers at similar intersections using the same press to the dark side approach. So I have to stop and redo the pressing or alter the pattern layout to avoid those bulky seams. I think I will press seams open with future Zen Chic patterns - I've got a half dozen more in my stash. Don't let this discourage you - just be aware. The designs are modern and cool and I've gotten a lot of compliments on both quilts. The effort is totally worth it.
