Quilting & Sewing Thread

There's more to sewing thread than meets the eye. You'll discover this as soon as you begin shopping. Here are some things to consider when choosing quilting thread:

• Weight: The higher the number, the finer the sewing thread. If you're stitching lightweight fabrics, use lighter thread weights such as 40 or 50. These are the most common cotton thread weights for sewing a quilt. For heavy materials, use a heavier thread weight. For hand quilting, embroidery or top stitching, 12-,18- and 28-weight threads are a good choice.
• Fiber Content: Generally, you're advised to match your thread with the type of fabric you're using – cotton fabric = cotton quilting thread. However, experienced quilters may prefer to use poly-cotton or polyester thread with cotton fabric. The type of thread you use is entirely up to you. Generally speaking, cotton thread is strong, takes dye well, adapts to changes in the fabric (e.g., shrinkage) and tolerates high heat during ironing. Polyester sewing thread is smooth and strong and has a little elasticity, making it ideal for synthetic blend fabrics, particularly stretchy ones. Silk sewing thread is used to stitch fine fabrics or for finishing work such as French seams or invisible hems.
• Color: Do you want your thread to blend in with your fabric or are you embroidering a design that needs to stand out? In all likelihood, you'll need both types of thread for your quilting project. You may even decide to get one of our thread boxes to cover all the bases.
